The Spectacle: Style Over Substance

As a science fiction geek, I loved the The Matrix. Like the second Star Wars trilogy, however, it sounds more and more like The Matrix Reloaded has committed the cardinal sin of postmodern film-making: style over substance. One of the defining elements of postmodern media is the spectacle. In essence, the image becomes more important than the plot, dialogue, and character development. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I like a good summer blockbuster as much as the next geek. Given the deep philosophical content of the The Matrix, I guess I was hoping for more. When I see The Matrix Reloaded, I'll leave my expectations in the lobby.
